12 URL Slug Best Practices for SEO in 2026

· 2 min read

URL slugs are one of the few parts of SEO you get to decide once and keep forever — if you decide well. These twelve rules cover every decision you'll face when naming a page.

Writing the slug

1. Match the search intent, not the full title. Your title might be "We Tested 14 Standing Desks for Six Months — Here's What Survived". Your slug should be standing-desk-reviews. The slug targets what people search; the title earns the click.

2. Keep it under 60 characters. Google shows URLs as breadcrumbs in results and truncates long ones. Shorter slugs also survive being pasted into emails and chat apps without wrapping.

3. Use 3–5 words. One-word slugs waste an opportunity to add context; ten-word slugs dilute every word in them. chocolate-chip-cookie-recipe is the sweet spot between cookies and the-best-ever-soft-and-chewy-chocolate-chip-cookie-recipe.

4. Drop stop words — usually. A, the, and, of rarely add meaning: history-of-the-internet works fine as internet-history. But keep a stop word when removing it changes the meaning or produces something unreadable. what-is-a-slug is better than slug.

5. Front-load the keyword. Word order matters less than it once did, but truncation is real: if the URL gets cut off in a search result or a share card, the words that survive should be the ones that matter.

Formatting the slug

6. Always lowercase. Servers treat /Blog and /blog as different resources. Mixed-case URLs eventually produce duplicate-content pairs and broken links from case-mangling email clients.

7. Hyphens, never underscores or spaces. Google's guidance has been consistent for over a decade: hyphens separate words, underscores don't. Spaces become %20 and destroy readability instantly.

8. Strip every special character. Ampersands, apostrophes, quotes, emoji — all of them either break, get percent-encoded, or cause subtle bugs in analytics tools. rock-roll or rock-and-roll, never rock-&-roll.

9. Transliterate non-ASCII characters. crème-brûlée-recipe becomes cr%C3%A8me-br%C3%BBl%C3%A9e-recipe the moment someone shares it. Convert to plain ASCII at creation time: creme-brulee-recipe.

10. Think twice about numbers and dates. best-laptops-2024 looks stale by 2026, and changing the slug later costs you a redirect. If content will be updated in place, keep the slug evergreen (best-laptops) and put the year in the title, which you can edit freely.

Maintaining slugs

11. Never change a published slug without a 301. Every existing link, bookmark, and search ranking points at the old URL. If a change is genuinely necessary, redirect the old slug permanently and update internal links to point directly at the new one.

12. Keep slugs unique across the site. Most platforms enforce this, but multi-author and multi-category sites can produce /news/launch and /blog/launch colliding in search. One topic, one URL.

Apply all twelve automatically

Rules 6–9 are mechanical, and mechanical rules belong in tooling. The slug generator applies lowercase, hyphenation, special-character stripping, transliteration, and optional stop-word removal in one pass — then the SERP preview shows you whether the result survives truncation in an actual search result.
